Letter from our Dean

Dear Maple Village Community,

What a spectacular turn-out for our Creative Discipline Lecture held on Tuesday evening!! There were 97 in attendance, including many from the surrounding community, and Lou Harvey Zahn not only entertained everyone with her Aussie humor, but also put parents at ease, explained natural development stages from ages two through teens and gave very practical advice on working with children of all ages. One line that stuck with me was - When they are toddlers, they copy you, and when they are teens, they criticize you. As a parent of three teenagers, and looking back on my own feisty high school years, I had to laugh.

Lou concentrated on the three L’s of parenting. Love them, Limit them, Let them be. She reminded us that the word “discipline” stems from the word “disciple” and means to teach. She discussed the differences between authoritarian (based on rewards and punishments with little warmth or teaching of new behavior), passive (doing nothing/avoiding, and thus having very little control), and the ultimate goal of Creative Discipline, combining control and warmth, based on Rudolf Steiner’s “Loving Authority.”

She focused on meeting your children where they are and gave loads of examples of how to engage with them in a fun and productive way, resulting in a happier home.

After the evening was over, I thought - “Let’s keep discussing this together!” Leading parenting classes for 15 years, I am excited by this opportunity to further talk to you about the topics Lou brought. If you attended the lecture and want to discuss pieces of it, get further support or advice, let’s meet. If you were unable to attend, you are still invited to join in the conversation!

30 Second Survey - PLEASE Respond!!

Dear families,

We are attaching a VERY quick demographic survey and would appreciate greatly if you could respond ASAP before it gets lost in your email!

In order for our school to participate in a very useful Waldorf School database and also in order for us to share our diversity with prospective families, we ask that you please participate for ENROLLED children only. All responses are anonymous.

*Please note the answers are divided into MALE and FEMALE, so read the choices carefully!

We are hoping for 100% participation!

Thank you so much,

Lisa

Parent Village Corner

Hello Villagers,

Below is a working Harvest Faire Donation Wishlist. I have also included a Donation Letter and Procurement Form to present to businesses. We are also accepting sponsorships and will include the business ads in our Program. $100 per page (so a 1/4 of the page = $25 etc.) Please refer any donations or sponsorships to:

Angie Hendrix: angkiel4@yahoo.com

Sally Nobbs: sallyskye@icloud.com

Andi Levine: ShineWithAndi@gmail.com

I also wanted to invite you all to join a Facebook group I created for Volunteers. It might be an easier place to communicate, rather than have too many emails. It is MAPLE VILLAGE HARVEST FAIRE VOLUNTEERS. It is a closed group so just send the request and I'll approve you. I'd like to keep this to only our school community.

Thank you all in advance for all of your help!
